Canterbury Triathlon Postponed until October, Swimming achievements

The Canterbury Primary Schools' triathlon at Pegasus, which was due to be held on 11 March has been postponed until Wednesday 28 October 2015.  Entries will close on Monday 19 October.

The algae in the lake has increased since last week and the likelihood of it clearing before then is minimal.
This is because the springs which run water through the lake are dry and we would have to have a considerable amount of rain within the next 2 weeks to clear the algae.  It is also most unlikely that there would have enough rain to do this.

The School held their Senior Swimming sports at Dudley Aquatic Centre Yesterday. We were so impressed with the improvement in the swimming skills overall and really think the Mainpower Trust Sponsored Swimming programme has made a  significant difference in the confidence and skills of our students. So please if you are a biker get a team together and support at the Rakahuri Rage this weekend as it is the major fundraiser for the Trust.

We are sending a team of 23 to the Rakahuri Swimming Sports on Monday swimming in all but 4 of the events. (time qualification)
The House relay races were noisy, hotly contested events as they should be.

Tomorrow concludes our Triathlon season (until October) with the House Team Tri occurring at 2.30pm.

Backyard Cricket

Backyard cricket

Cricket is New Zealand’s national summer sport. But it can be difficult to rustle up enough pads, gloves, bats and helmets for a quick afternoon game. And finding a pitch with adequate grass cover and an even bounce is nigh-on impossible. So, as true Kiwis, we improvise. A bucket, boogie board, tree or rubbish bin are all perfectly fine as makeshift stumps. The inconsistent bounce from a backyard pitch also ensures nobody spends too long batting. Best of all, a tennis ball negates the need for any protective gear.

Of course, everyone has their own rules for back yard cricket - and there are too many bizarre variations to list. We recommend agreeing on the basic rules before commencing the game.

Number of players:    2+

What you need:
   at least 1 cricket bat
a few tennis balls (some might go missing)
2 sets of stumps (rubbish bins or upside buckets can be used).

Activity:

Set the stumps up about 10 metres apart for older kids, or about 6 metres for littlies.
The batters stump is best put against a fence if in a backyard.

If just two players, choose your batter and a bowler.
If more, your bowlers, two batters, and scatter the rest of the kids around to field the ball.
To avoid squabbles, make sure everyone gets a chance to both bat and bowl.

Backyard cricket is played just like normal cricket - but there are a few different rules to make it fair.

Extra rules:
Can't go out first ball - whoever's batting, they can't go out on the first ball (making it fairer for little ones).
'Tippity-run' - if the ball is hit even a little, the batters have to run.
'One hand - one bounce' - a fielder can catch the batter out with one hand, even after the tennis ball has bounced off a fence or wall.
Any wicket out - the batter can be knocked out if either stump is hit.
'Six and out' - if the ball is hit over the fence/ house they are awarded six runs - but are also out (this is where the extra balls come in handy).
No LBW's (Leg Before Wicket) - it's too tricky and starts arguments - unless Dad or Mum wants to umpire.
Automatic runs - pick certain spots in the backyard (like the side of a shed or a fence) and award a certain number of automatic runs to anyone who can hit them.
Last one out - the very last batter can keep on going by themselves until caught out.
Use an automatic wicket keeper such as fence, side of garage, tree etc
Fielders can be objects too – a hit is an automatic out!
3 non-hits or non-attempts results in an out – boring!

2015 - Wahoo. Go the Black Caps and congratulations to the Sevens Team winning the Wellington 7s final!

PE & Sport in Term 1

We have a busy term ahead of us with loads of opportunities to be involved in physical activity.
It is great to see the new lines painted around the School, especially the cricket wickets on the volley board.

Students are asked to change for PE & Sport. The tee shirt is available at the Office while the dri-fit shorts can be purchased from Postie Plus or the Warehouse. Because it is difficult to keep their broad rimmed hat on in the wind and while running about, the students are able to wear a cap during that time. It is imperative that students are sun blocked for any outdoor activity.

A real focus this term is the ICC Cricket World Cup. Last year 4 of our students, Bailey, Bailey, Cameron, and Toby represented us at the launch with the Tournament’s countdown (and to play cricket with Cricket greats Richard Hadlee and Debbie Hockley, oh yeah and Kate and Wills!)
Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the game in PE.
25 students will be invited to attend the England vs Scotland Game on the 23rd.

Basketball – There is the opportunity to play basketball in the Friday Night Basketball Competition which starts on the 20th and runs for 6 weeks this term.
North Canterbury Basketball is happy to announce its Hoops Academy is back for 2015 !
Hoops is a skill based academy for Primary School aged players where they learn all the skills they need to become a successful basketball player. Sessions are held at the Mega Centre
North Canterbury Basketball are also proud to bring you the Stars Academy run by our own Coaches Liam Connely and Paul Exeter
They will teach our top up and coming players the skills and game sense they need to succeed in the Canterbury Club competition and at National Tournaments.

As always, swimming in Term 1 focusses on safety and confidence. Given the appalling drowning statistics this summer it is imperative that we continue to cherish our Community Pool and value the opportunities to develop knowledge and skills further including the lunchtime swims, class and PE sessions, our Swimming Sports, the Triathlons, Mainpower Trust’s swimming programme,  and our sailing, beach, and surfing programmes.

The PTA work extremely hard to provide a friendly, enjoyable and professionally run Community Triathlon, which we encourage families to support. Students can participate in individual and/or team events as can parents and older siblings. Leading into this is our syndicate’s team triathlon run on the afternoon of Friday 20th.
We also have a strong tradition of students representing the School at the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Triathlon. Interested individuals must attend the Community triathlon to be considered.

In the Community we value the fantastic work that Mainpower and the Sports Trust do in promoting physical activity and well being. They are hosting a Bike Rage as part of their Annual Fundraiser. Anyone over the age may enter this “marathon” team event so get some mates and family together, pitch a tent and give it a go!
