Athletics and Summer Tournament

Our House Relay afternoon was dominated by some outstanding performances from Kowhai!
Whero were the most consistent and got an award for some ingenuity!
WE held a champions sprint race over 80m. We assembled the ten fastest runners in the School  - across age groups and gender - the top 3 places went to: 1st by a whisker (or a head dip) was 12 year old Ben Hall, followed ever so closely by another 12 year olf. Tom Pascoe. In 3rd place was 11 year old Molly Snowden!

Congratulations to all the fernside Studentswho competed in the Rakahuri Zone sports - you were fantastic!
Please go the athletics page on the right for the full results for that event. Many chn will represent the zone at the Cant athletics on 1 Dec. More details will be posted as they arrive.
It is important that those athletes continue to maintain or improve fitness levels and practise regularly.

All year 7/8 students will participate in the Cant. School summer tournament on 23 Nov. WE are playing golf, tennis, kiwi tag and slow pitch. Are you able to ref slowpitch softball or kiwi tag for us?

NC Basketball trails for a inter-regional quad tournament are on soon - see bball page.

School Athletics Day happened!
Thanks everyone for your efforts and fab attitude!
The overall winners for each age group are on the athletics page.
The 11 and 12 year old results depended on the turbojav activity which was held on Friday afternoon. The athletes were doing some quick calculations as they went into the event. Talk about pressure!

Congratulations to Molly Snowden who got the highest number of points , just one more than Erika, Shannon, and Zara.

Success at Canterbury Events and upcoming events

Friday night basketball registration is open.
Winter sports tournaments occur in week 3 of next term, so we have this week to organise teams and 2 weeks for practising after the holidays. Please click onto the pages to the right for more information. Below that are the links to the North Canterbury and Canterbury Sports web sites.
Have a wonderful break with families. Hopefully you are get up to play in some snow! Good luck to all those who are playing representative sport.

Saskia Lane has been successful in her application to be this year's team captain of the Canterbury Cross Country team (80 runners). This is a real honour. Saskia, we know they have made a great choice and wish you continued success.

Fernside participated in 2 Canterbury events last week - and with success!

On Tuesday, 10 year 7/8 boys played in the indoor tournament at Pioneer Stadium. After a muddled first game the team settled down to a game plan that made the most of the modified foul rules. Although we finished second in our pool after losing 2 games, we made it to the semi finals where we met Kaiapoi North. To everyone's surprise we won by an astonishing 10 point margin. The boys played intelligent basketball and worked hard to produce a spot in the finals against Sacred College. Their team had impressed throughout the tournament with their shooting skills and huge adult support crew.
But Fernside were not to be taken lightly, and we certainly kept them on tenderhooks right to the last second when we were  1point behind and had won possession of the ball.
Alas, time ran out, and we came second! A brilliant effort by a fine group of Fernside representatives.
Thanks to Rosie Chalmers who was our referee for the day.
Thanks to our wonderful parents, Jackie, Rachel, Cath and Denise.

The next day saw Saskia Lane and Imogen Eglesfield compete in the gruelling Primary verse Intermediate School race. Each race saw 40 fine runners compete for 10 places in the Canterbury teams. These 2 girls were amazing! They passed many runners who had previously beat them, and showed all those attributes we value at Fernside School. Immy was placed an incredible 14th and Saskia again has worked her way into the team in 9th place!
Congratulations to you both. Saskia, we are thrilled with your success and look forward to supporting you in your lead up to the inter-provincials in Wellington.

Canterbury Swimming Results
Sporting Achievement
Last Thursday 6 children from Fernside School represented the Rakahuri Zone at The Canterbury Primary Swimming Championships held at Wharenui Pool.
They achieved some stunning results. Jack Henderson placed 2nd in breaststroke and 3rd in the backstroke, Erika Dickson placed 2nd in the 11 girls freestyle and 6th in the backstroke, Saskia Lane was placed 4th in backstroke and 7th in breaststroke, Zac Lane 8th in backstroke, Nic Van Royen 8th in freestyle.

AND the 12 year mixed relay team of Jack, Saskia, Nic, and Kendal Highet finished  1.04 seconds behind Halswell to finish 2nd!
It is worth mentioning that the best finish for a Fernside relay team at the Canterbury Swimming Event is 2nd  - and in that team to finish 2nd , 3 years in a row were Jack and Saskia. Saskia and Jack have got off to a flying start to the sporting year achieving top ten Canterbury finishes in both swimming and duathalon.

Watch Peter on You Tube - how does one skip while sitting down? How does one do what he does? He is amazingly talented so check out his moves and get ready for Jump Rope in Term 3.

Swimming comes to an end and cross country running begins

It is the beginning of the Winter Sports season so get involved and sign up for a club - if you aren't part of any club why don't you try table tennis? I think there is a club in Southbrook and there is a social league at Fernside Hall for adults too.

Do you have a swiss ball or moon hopper at home that is cluttering up the shed? Perhaps you want to donate it to the School?

Cross Country training will be more pleasant in the cooler days so please wear sports' shoes laced up well (Skatey shoes do not support your feet in activities which involve running. They do not give your ankles and heels the support you require, especially in the years of huge growth. You need shoes to fit snugly so you can dodge and change direction quickly.
Distances for the School cross country vary from 1 - 3km. These are not difficult distances for years 4 - 8 and will be easier still if you are prepared. Get walking on a daily basis, then run some of it, building up to the distance your age group will run.
Getting the firewood split and stacked is my next activity!

We look forward to the Canterbury Swimming Sports on the 7th April.
We have 2 teams playing in the Friday night NCJBA Basketball competition this term, the Fernside Seniors and Fernside Juniors. Thanks to Trent and Olivia for coaching.

Canterbury Events proceed

The Canterbury Primary Sports Assn. have been thinking laterally to get the championship events relocated from QE11.
So the same dates apply but at different venues and with changed formats, which is great news for our talented athletes.
The Swimming will be held at Wharenui Pool. All events will be timed and winners named from those times instead of heats and finals. Congratulations to Saskia, Jack, Nic, Kendall, Zac, and Erika who have qualified for them.

The triathlon will now be a duathlon held at Ruapuna Race Way in Templeton. The athletes will run 2 km, bike and run another 1km.

17 of our swimmers were placed in the top 3 of at least one event.
A fantastic result for those hours spent in the pool!

Swimming Sports at Fernside
Thanks for the relaxed and entertaining afternoons! Being outside in the sun was pleasant so we were lucky with the weather. The House relays have never been as well organised so well done to the year 8 leaders! Kahurangi took out both the length and width relays!
Thanks to Evelyn, Louise, Jackie, Sophie, Neisha, Cath, Janet, Hanni, and Denise.
And on the Friday thanks to Hayley, Sophie, Janet, Jen, Cam, and Bryn.

The X-treme events were hilarious, it was impressive to see the students taking one for the team in the body slams!

The notice for the Swimmers who have qualified for the Rakahuri Zone Sports next Friday has been sent home with the students and is also included on the page  to the right of this blog.

Changes to Swimming and Triathlon

Due to recent events we are unable to hold our senior Swimming Sports at Kaiapoi Pool, and unable to get a booking at Dudley. We still wish to celebrate our aquatic skills, whether they be in freestyle competing against the clock or making the biggest splash in our "x-treme" events.

So the Fernside 2011 Senior Swimming sports will be held at School from 1pm on both Thursday 3rd for championship events and House Relays, and from 1pm on Friday for non-championship and "X-treme" events!

Bleachers would be a blessing! We look forward to fine weather and House colours!

The Senior School Canterbury Triathlon will occur next Wednesday at midday.

Week 2 and there is plenty happening

HI all

I am pleased to announce the PE monitors for 2011 - they are Jack H, Harri P, Ari P, and Tom P. Congratulations also to Shannon L and Ben H who are the new basketball captains. Thanks to all the students who applied for the positions and have shown such an interest in facilitating physical activity.

Last Friday Rooms 9 and 10 held a team triathlon. If the competitiveness and determination displayed in that event are anything to go by, then we are in for an amazing year. Thanks to Denise and Cam for helping out at the pool and to the students who encouraged each other. Mr Spencer has made a short film of the event which I hope to display here soon.
In first place, finishing in a slighter different place were Kieran J, Erika, and Mitchell.
In second place but through the tape first (confusing!) were Ari, Jade G, and Phoebe.
Coming next in 3rd place were Mikayla, Saskia, Ashley B, and Lucas.

North Canterbury Basketball begins on March 25th - see the page on basketball for more information or click on the link to the NC website.

Swimming entries are to be made over the next few days and we look forward to some relay trials and practices - go Whero!

We have been challenged to participate in the Inter-School Tug-O-War competition at the Swannanoa Country Fair on Sunday, March 6 at the Swannanoa Domain.  The competition is open to teams of between 6-15 Year 1-8 students (teams will compete against other teams of equal numbers).
Please gather up a team and enter if you are interested - wear our school colours and maybe we will win the fantastic sports pack for our school!

Hot off the Press - I heard at the NC Primary Schools' Sports meeting tonight that Nick Willis will be receiving his Olympic Silver medal at QE2 at 7pm at the upcoming International Athletics Meet.

Do you know of an parent competing in this week's Coast to Coast event?
I hope you are training for this month's Fernside Community Triathlon - just practise the transitions a few times to help calm the nerves!

Senior Syndicate Triathlon Video - At the End of Week 1 the senior syndicate ran a team triathlon in which all the children competed. Here is some of the footage.

New Beginnings

Wednesday 2nd February
Welcome to our new blogspot! And have a happy 2011.
We (my PE monitors and I) hope to keep you up-to-date with PE programmes and sporting activities, dates, and results.

Keep abreast of upcoming recreational and sporting events.
I hope you post information that may interest our readers as well.

I will announce our new PE monitors soon.
I look forward to your participation. Please feel free to email me on annabel.wilson@xtra.co.nz

This Friday the students in rooms 9 and 10 will participate in a team triathlon. They have selected to run, cycle, or swim and we have organised them into what we hope will be even teams.
