The end of the Olympics, triathlons and coaches

Coaches are the key to people playing sports, and certainly to achievement.
They are the reason players stay with a sport and continue onto competitions. No matter how small a role a coach plays, their input is valuable.
WE have 4 basketball teams at Fernside this term but only have 2, possibly 3 coaches. WE would love to have some more help with our eager and happy teams. Thanks to Kelly for coaching the mini ball team, to Brad & Jackson for coaching one of our yr 5/6 teams.
Ring the School on 313 8608 if you can help or email me annabel.wilson@xtra.co.nz

We are in the season of triathlons and last week showed how much fun they can be. The senior syndicate team triathlon was great fun. The teams embraced the spirit of the event sporting colours, names and even fairy wings and wands as they ran! Despite a muddled run course and finish the students were amazing - they were so focussed and optimistic. Fab to see parents pop down to support their children.
THe PTA community Triathlon saw a slick course set up before 9am and soon there were children of all ages zooming aroung the School making the most of an actual course! Many ex-students were present to support and participate both individually and in teams. Congratulations to the organisers!

The School will send a team of triahletes to the Canterbury Triathlon in March.

Sadly the Olympic games come to an end in what I could only describe as a feast of expertise, athleticism and complete dedication and desire to achieve. So cliche, but I couldn't tear myself away from the screen. Knowing that every athlete there was the best in their country and watching how competition affected what they could achieve.
COOL, CALM & COLLECTED
Incredible. Jossi Wells carried the flag in at the closing, he was so close with his 4th, brilliant.
The Xgames events certainly added some flair and more fun to the games.
I was stunned by the performance of our speed skater Shane Dobbin who has played down his abilities saying it was all about his time and not to expect a medal. He was placed 7th in the 5000m after a 17th finish in Vancover 4 yrs ago!
He is an Olympian of some merit.

Now to the jobs that have thus far remained undone!

Canterbury Sports and new tennis players

Canterbury Sport
1.              Triathlon  There will be a changed course this year, as alterations are still happening on the bike course.  Maps will be on our website www.primarysportscanterbury.org.nz within the week. The Waimairi Surf Life Saving club will assist on boards in the water.  We will also be using transponders on ankle straps to speed up results and save on administration time.  Thanks to Pub Charity for their donation to allow us to also use this system for the duathlon and cross country events.
The intermediates will also run in their age groups with the primary school competitors and there will be one set of results for both.

2.              Website A copy of the information in the 2014 Sports Directory is all there at www.primarysportscanterbury.org.nz .  There is a link to the website on this site.

4.              Swimming please note that the 9 and 10 years events will begin the day at 9am.  This will be followed by 11 & 12 years and open events, beginning at 11am.  This is to try to have less numbers waiting for events at any one time.  We have changed to a new venue at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and will be trying to allow spectators in to view this year.

8 Fernside School students entered into the world of competition tennis today. They absolutely nailed the etiquette side of the event representing Fernside Tennis Club so well, as did their supporting families. They looked so smart and were smiling a lot. The aspect that took them by surprise was how competition affected their shots. When points mattered nerves entered into the mix. This is what makes top performances so special. As I told the players - nerves affect the performance of those at the Olympics so they were in good company.

Look to the pages for a relaxedu tournament coming up and a netball night on 17th

Sports opportunities and changes to upcoming Canterbury events

Winter sports are getting underway with local sports clubs advertising in all the papers. They send a lot of information to the School as well. I endeavour to get this onto the blog under the page about sporting activities outside the School.

The NCJBA are offering children the opportunity to play basketball for 6 weeks this term - see the bball page.
These teams are School based teams - notices must be into me by this Friday or email me directly
annabel.wilson@xtra.co.nz

Netball at Fernside Netball Club and at the centre can be accessed from the North Canterbury netball web . site

Sochi Olympics

Sleep deprived
Jobs undone
Cricket and Sevens registered but not dominating

It must be The Olympics!

IS anyone else struggling to tear themselves away from watching these fabulous athletes at the top of their game? Just this morning I saw 4 Kiwi girls in the top 20 in the world for the snowboarding jumps, and 2 of them were in the top 10!
Fantastic.
Got to see some of my favourite events in the figure skating and the biathlon as well as enjoying the ice hockey - there is something about being padded up with a stick trying to flick an object into a net that appeals!

I have changed the cross country date to allow for the rms 9/10 camp in May but all other dates are looking good at this stage.

Basketball this term is a 6 week affair. It is a great time to try the sport if you haven't done so before and of course for those who love it you will just love being on the court.
The notice is on the basketball page and registrations are due this Friday please. Payment comes a few weeks later (payment is per team so varies according to numbers).

Remember to get your triathlon entry into the office.

2014 - Wahoo Another year of fun and frivolity and heaps of sporting opportunities!

Welcome back to anyone that visits this blog - very few no doubt!
I have been watching a one-sided superbowl final today. Not that thrilling, but kudos to the Seattle Seahawks for their first ever SuperBowl Victory. And to add to that it is only the second major Sports title won by a Seattle Team (The NBA team Sonics have won one title, just want to throw in there that I watched MJ play them when the Bulls were in Seattle - think I was there to wacth Sting in concert. Well worth the 12 hour drive from our USA pad at the time!) It just goes to reinforce the fact that you win less sports titles as you age or progress up the ranks - so appreciate any win as it occurs! Speaking of the NBA, isn't it a thrill to see Steve Adams doing so well.
Hope you have time to watch some of the Winter Olympics this month. We may get a medal yet.
Who can name the last (isn't it the one and only?) Winter Olympics Medal for NZ?

It is time I got some info up here for all you swimmers, triathletes and ballers!
I hope you have been visiting the Canterbury Basketball Site as they have brought back the RAMS to play in the NZ National league - so exciting!
Do you have any sports news to share. email me on annabel.wilson@xtra.co.nz

Fast approaching are the School triathlons and Swimming events - perfect for this warm weather.

Sports News
The year begins with swimming and triathlon events over the next 2 months. We love having all the families particpating and supporting these events which are spectator treats!
Join us at Dudley on Thursday 27th Feb at 10am for our senior swimming sports (yrs 5 - 8) and at the Community Triathlon on Sunday 23 February. The senior syndicate will be holding a team triathlon on the afternoon of Feb. 21st and an inter-class X-treme swimming competition the following week.

This year we have added in an important rule for any yr 5- 8 student wishing to enter the Canterbury Schools' Triathlon (March 3) at Pegasus.
"Participation in the individual age events of the Community PTA Triathlon is a prerequisite for any yr 5 - 8 Fernside School student being accepted into the Fernside School Canterbury Triathlon Squad."

Please contact Annabel with any enquiries or offers of help for the swimming sports.
"Fernside School participates in the NCJBA Friday night competition which runs for 6 weeks starting on 7th of March and finishing on April 11th. Notices will be available on the sports blog soon and your children will get a notice from Annabel. This is only open to year 5- 8 students. Although the School administers the teams we need lots of support from parents and ex-students for managing and coaching."
