Sporting Success at Fernside - on track, bike and in water

Congratulations to all the Fernside Students playing in Club champs, representing the School, Zone and province in swimming, Biking and athletics

Jacob Turner & Harri Silcock rode for 7 hours to win the Rakahuri Rage yr 7/8 student category with their mate Dominic. What an amazing feat! They continue to impress us with their perseverance and their fitness!

And on the same day Lillie Rayner & Ben Phillips represented Canterbury at the South Island Club Athletics Championships with some success I might add!
Ben won his shot put, Lillie was placed in Long Jump, relay and I think 400m.
They loved being part of the experience and are quietly chuffed!
WE think they are fantastic.

And as if that wasn't enough the Swim team had a great outing at the pool yesterday.
The results differed from the Rakahuri Champs - some better and some not so, but times were consistently improved.
The smile on the face of James was something to behold!

Swimming, Triathlon and Biking

MainPower Primary School Swimming Programme

The North Canterbury Sport & Recreation Trust is administering the MainPower Primary School Swimming Programme again in 2016.    This programme has been growing for several years and now includes around 6000 Yr2-8 students from across North Canterbury, who each receive 10 quality swimming lessons for just $10 each.  Sponsorship for this programme comes from MainPower, Waimakariri and Hurunui Councils, KiwiSport and other funding agencies, as well as NCSRT activities within the community, including the Rakahuri Rage Teams Mountain Bike Race in Rangiora on 20th March.

Unfortunately this year our KiwiSport funding has been cut by $14,000 for the Swimming programme so we are becoming more reliant on events like the Rakahuri Rage and our key local sponsors to keep it running, and that is where your community support is much appreciated.  Last year we raised over $10,000 for the swimming programme but this year we hope to raise even more to help make up for the funding we have lost.

The Rakahuri Rage is a fantastic entry level event suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels, and will provide a challenge for everyone.  It is an ideal opportunity for junior riders to compete and for adults to team up with kids, neighbours, family or school groups.  It’s open to riders 12 years and older (or Yr 8 students) and can be used as one of the activities for the William Pike Challenge Award.

It’s only $55 for adults and $35 for 12-17 Year olds.  Teams are of 2-4 riders and we’re sure you’ll have a fun day, get some exercise and make use of one of the great mountainbiking tracks on our door step.

Race date is Sunday 20th March 2016.  You can find out more and download the entry form from www.rakahuri-rage.nz or pick up a printed copy from Push Bike Rangiora, the Sports Centre on East Belt, or Dudley Park Aquatic Centre.

You can keep up-to-date on Rakahuri Rage race news and information by liking our facebook page.

The track is now well marked from the Rangiora Race Course or the Ashely River Bridge, so get out and give it a go and get your team entry in before 10th March.

We hope to see you at Rakahuri Rage 2016.

Have you tried this game?

Indiaca is a form of the Brazilian game peteca popular in Europe. It is played on court across a net with similar rules to volleyball but instead of a ball, a large shuttlecock, sometimes also called an indiaca, or featherball is used; this consists of four goose feathers attached to a heavier base, and it is controlled using the hands. In this way, indiaca differs from jiànzi (or featherball), a very similar game originating in Vietnam and China, where the shuttlecock is controlled with the feet. Indiaca can be played by two individual players facing each other, or by small teams.

December and Student Success

"Tis the time of year where we deck the halls

. . . with awards of recognition and celebration

… and the odd sparkly decoration. "

There is so much to celebrate in the Fernside School Community and parents are a massive part of that.
Thank you . Have a lovely warm and relaxed summer break (and some rain too I hope). Annabel

6 classes descended on Rangiora Golf Club last week so the students could experience the game for real. They appreciated the opportunity to have putting competitions and walk the fairways with their peers and parents. There was much laughter and celebration, and entertainment as promised!

This week 19 students represented the Rakahuri Zone at the Canterbury Athletics Championships in Ashburton. Many students achieved PB's and made finals in races.
To top that , Amelia Fungavaka won the 10 girls Shot Put with a throw of 8.82m smashing her previous School record! Congratulations Amelia.

Today, all 4 of our School Basketball Teams will take to the court, many for the last time as they transition to High School, for the NCJBA Finals. Good luck to all the teams and a
MASSIVE THANKS TO OUR COACHES: LUCAS, KELLIE, MITCHELL, MEGAN & MR BAILEY.

Last week Jacob, Ashton & Cohan competed in the Canterbury Triathlon achieving fantastic times and credible placings. Jacob took out 11th in the 11 boys, Ashton 17th in 10 boys & Cohan 18th in 9 boys.
