Cross Country postponed until Thursday

Cross country postponed until Thursday 11am
at 891 Mt Thomas Road.
The course looks stunning this morning,
but the wind chill factor makes it potentially unsafe for our students.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Thursday.
If you can assist with the event - marshalling, recording etc
please contact Annabel at annabel.wilson@xtra.co.nz or through your class teacher.

Cross country week - and the weather. Rugby courses info.

Cross Country
Is on for tomorrow, Tuesday 28th May. The weather is looking marginal but quite possibly will be dry; it will certainly be cold.
If it is postponed it will be to the Thursday 30th  at the same time, not Wed. as previously indicated.
Our priority is keeping the children safe and healthy, so if the weather is cold we will make changes to the programme. (Races will start from 11am)
It is likely that we will hold the years ¾ race as soon as possible (11am) and then bus them back to School. Thank you for the offers of help.
If you are able to assist on the day please see Annabel at the course at 10.30am.
We will place a sign at the School gate indicating any changes to the event.
Please send your children to School with warm clothing, jacket, hat and gloves as well as their other gear. They will run in their shorts and tee shirt (a polyprop top underneath is a good option, especially for the younger students).
There is no water at the venue so students must have a named bottle of water with them.

Rugby Course offered

We (The Rugby Union)  can run some "Catch up " Small Blacks courses for Primary schools to ensure all Coaches of Primary school rugby  are accredited .

The Courses will be held as follows

  2. Thursday 6th June at  4:30pm @ North Canterbury Sports Trust House , Edward St , Rangiora.

                              B) These courses are for ANY person who is coaching a primary school rugby team in 2013 who               has not yet attended a course in 2013. Thanks for your great support .

Cheers

Top 20 placings at Duathlon

Congratulations to Jacob and Harri who gained a 12th and 13th place at the Canterbury Duathlon yesterday. This is a fantastic achievement, especially when you see 128 competitors in that grade!

Did you read the article in The Press recently about successful business women playing team sports.
In a study it was discovered that playing a team sport had prepared women ( and men would be the same in my opinion) for the world of business. Not only did they gain all those skills of working in a team and having a positive attitude to physical activity but they also learned HOW TO LOSE.
(Not that they liked it!)
The women surveyed said that they were able to deal successfully with knock backs and that losing didn't deflate them instead it made them think about what they needed to do to win the next time. In other words losing taught them how to make themselves more skilled, more knowledgable, and certainly more determined!
MUSIC TO MY EARS and nothing surprising. Playing sport teaches us life skills!

Good luck to the Rugby Team at their Fun Day.

Watch this space for an update on the School Cross Country and a possible pre-visit to the course.

Whiz Kids on their bikes

Harri and Jacob recently teamed up to take on 60 teams of year 5/6 and 7/8 all racing together in the  Huxster Mountain Bike School Team Relay at McLeans Island.

They came 3rd in the Year 5/6 boys team relay!

This a great result for our two boys.

Some Year 6 students are going to play in a Rippa Rugby Tournament in Term 2. If successful locally they will play in the Canterbury Tournament.

March at Fernside School

Triathlon season has finished with the Weetbix triathlon in the weekend. The picture in the Press of a competitor struggling to locate his bike illustrates the many challenging aspects of a traithlon. Congratulations to our students who competed.
Jacob Turner 9yrs, was our highest placed triathlete at the Canterbury Primary/Intermediate Schools' Triathlon at Pegasus last week. He was placed 21st. An excellent result Jacob.

Upcoming events include the NC Swim Champs on 25 March (14 students have been invited to participate in this event) and The Canterbury Swim Sports after that. We have 3 talented representatives in the Canterbury event - Tom and Rosa and Harrison.

There is a Duathlon at Ruapuna in May and our School Cross Country after that. We are planning on holding our cross country event at a local farm for year 3 - 8 students.
Students run either 2 or 3km dependent on year. Wearing supportive well-fitting sports shoes is helpful especially for the 11 - 13 age group when sore heels can develop due to growth.

Are you interested in watching the NZ Breakers Basketball Team play?
WE can secure good priced tickets now with a group booking. Sarah has kindly offered to co-ordinate this.

A Special ‘Early Bird Offer’
