Whiz Kids on their bikes

Harri and Jacob recently teamed up to take on 60 teams of year 5/6 and 7/8 all racing together in the  Huxster Mountain Bike School Team Relay at McLeans Island.

They came 3rd in the Year 5/6 boys team relay!

This a great result for our two boys.

Some Year 6 students are going to play in a Rippa Rugby Tournament in Term 2. If successful locally they will play in the Canterbury Tournament.

March at Fernside School

Triathlon season has finished with the Weetbix triathlon in the weekend. The picture in the Press of a competitor struggling to locate his bike illustrates the many challenging aspects of a traithlon. Congratulations to our students who competed.
Jacob Turner 9yrs, was our highest placed triathlete at the Canterbury Primary/Intermediate Schools' Triathlon at Pegasus last week. He was placed 21st. An excellent result Jacob.

Upcoming events include the NC Swim Champs on 25 March (14 students have been invited to participate in this event) and The Canterbury Swim Sports after that. We have 3 talented representatives in the Canterbury event - Tom and Rosa and Harrison.

There is a Duathlon at Ruapuna in May and our School Cross Country after that. We are planning on holding our cross country event at a local farm for year 3 - 8 students.
Students run either 2 or 3km dependent on year. Wearing supportive well-fitting sports shoes is helpful especially for the 11 - 13 age group when sore heels can develop due to growth.

Are you interested in watching the NZ Breakers Basketball Team play?
WE can secure good priced tickets now with a group booking. Sarah has kindly offered to co-ordinate this.

Thank you to all of the schools and teams that took part in the Monday Twilight Schools Competition for Term 4 2012.
Waimak United Football Club is pleased to be able to support football in schools and are proud to announce that we will be putting over $2000 back into schools in the form of football prizepacks for the winning schools in each section of each grade.  This term we had 13 sections - so 13 prizepacks!

Attached is the information for the Term 1 2013 competition, so that you have the dates nice and early.  We will also resend this information early in the New Year.

The Term 4 results follow.  Some of the leagues were very tightly contested and we hope that everyone enjoyed the opportunity to play some summer football.  We are waiting on a few backordered items in the prizepacks but will endeavour to get them to the winning schools prior to the end of term.

Once again thank you for your support.

There have been some football teams and Touch teams playing as Fernside School teams as well. The football teams did so well they each won  gear bags full of footballs and goalie gloves.

Two teams recently played golf in the Canterbury Summer Tournament. Thanks to Mark and Ami who made that possible.

The parent and grandparent support for sports' teams in the Fernside Community is a special feature of the area and must be acknowledged and cherished. Thank you to all the adults who give children and our teens the opportunities to participate in physical activities.

4 classes have benefitted from a softball unit over the last 5 weeks. If your child is interested in playing softball our closest clubs are Kaiapoi and Papanui, or visit www.csa.org.nz
